Art Retreats & Projects

Sol Space has been developed with the aim of sharing the space with artists wishing to combine a retreat with creative work. The focus at present is on artists involved in contemporary painting but the space could work equally well for writers, dancers and musicians. The downstairs studio is a good size (approximately 15 x 5 metres) with a high ceiling, spotlights with daylight fittings and double doors opening onto the lane. There is a door connecting the studio to the rest of the house and stairs from the studio lead up to a further studio space within the loft, which has two large skylights, and similar floor area and lighting. These spaces can be adapted for practical art work, exhibitions, or performance space. The walls are lined with plywood so fixings can be made easily. All walls and ceilings are painted white. Projects and exhibitions may be documented on this website.

The garden contains many interesting corners and subjects for those wishing to work from observation, and the surrounding area hosts a great deal of interesting source material such as architectural details or flora and fauna. Cloud formations in the locality can be particularly dramatic. The open-fronted barn (the hangar) adjacent to the studio and the main barn provide useful storage or workspace for sculptors.

Artists may be invited to spend time at Sol Space, or may apply.
